Breezy Doin' It Big
FRIDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Monica, TREND Staff Writer
Even with an indisputable mishap that ruined his image, Chris Brown is still recognized for his amazing talent in many aspects such as singing and dancing. Recently, he has shown a different side of himself in a more artistic sense. In the pictures above, Chris teamed up with Australian graffiti specialist Kid Zoom to collaborate on some art pieces.
Chris stated "Art was my only outlet. Aside from music, art is the thing that I like to escape. And I appreciate other artists who have that talent and that eye for detail and eye for their own imagination. Art is a part of my life and it influences me completely.”
While looking at the pieces he created, one can assume that his inspirations came from his every day experiences. Additionally, his art is also reflected in his fashion sense as both are independent and unique to himself. He says that when you think about style, it's what you basically bring to it and that's exactly what he did with the murals he created. His ideas for music, art, and fashion are all incorporated into one which makes Chris Brown the fashionable icon that he is today.
Chris always states that "The clothes don't wear you. You wear the clothes." Fans should try to replicate this mindset since fashion is all about how you present yourself. It's also about what you are trying to say by the way you piece your clothes together. It's all about making a statement and that's what Chris continually does whether it be through music, art, or fashion.

Why We Love Rachel!
It seems like almost all of our recent UCSD Best Dressed ladies have professed their love for the darling Rachel Bilson and her signature style. And anyone can see why. It doesn't matter if she is photographed running to grab some groceries or if she is strutting down the red carpet, Ms. Bilson knows how to dress. Her style is classic, yet eclectic, casual, but undeniably chic. So how does one get her look? It's easier than you think...For starters, you'll need an awesome pair of Raybans. Rachel is almost never seen without them, and she changes it up between the classic Rayban style and aviators. Just find a shape that is best for your features and don't pick anything too narrow or too wide for your face. Luckily, the folks at Rayban realize that all heads are not created equal, and make their signature sunnies is different sizes now. Yippee!A great pair of jeans or shorts is also a must. Go for a skinny or straight leg style. This pair of Hudson's will quickly become a favorite in your wardrobe because of the super-soft denim and rich color. Next, find a flowy blouse. It doesn't matter what color you choose, but Rachel usually sticks to neutral tones like cream's and toupe's. This one from Urban Outfitters is simple enough, but them hemline gives it a touch of pizzaz. Don't pick one with too much design or embellishment, becuase the one thing Ms. Bilson knows how to do best is accessorize. It's time for shoes! Depending on the weather, you can rock some great looking boots or booties. These slouchy ones from Steve Madden are adorable. If it's warmer outside, try some gladiator sandals or sky high platforms (only if you can walk in them). Nude peep-toes like these will look great. Now, technically you could call your outfit quits here and look presentable. However, you would not be doing yourself or Rachel's style justice. The biggest thing that makes her style so great is her ability to accessorize. Now is your chance to have fun and make yourself stand out from the crowd. Rachel loves scaves, no matter the weather. This one from Express can be worn easily through spring and summer. If you aren't a fan of scarves, try a stranded necklace instead. Now, the last thing you need to do is throw on a cardigan or leather jacket, tousel your hair, and you are ready to strut your stuff out the door. See? That wasn't too bad.

Bundle Up
TUESDAY ACCESSORY
Recommendation: Lavanya, TREND Writer
With the cold breezes coming in, it's time for the knits to come out! And no, the shivers you got after your professor passed out the midterm isn't what we're talking about! It's that cold in the morning with the marine layer hovering up above or that stale cold when night falls upon the city.
Sweaters are a great way to keep warm while preventing the bulk of heavy jackets and coats. These hybrid, wrap around sweaters can come in assortment of colors. Their draping characteristic adds an air of elegance thus making them highly effective accessories.
Boots, canvas shoes, and even heels compliment these cardigans well and can help alter the level of sophistication you're aiming for in your outfit. Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and modcloth have really nice selections.

Collette Wylie: Up and Coming Model
Special Feature
By: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer
Collette Wylie, 15, started modeling when she was 13 and has already produced photos that are used in well known stores such Charlotte Russe and Kohl's. Collette resides in my small hometown in Northern California, and she is a down to earth, all-around American girl.
Following a small sample of her diverse portfolio, there is a brief Q&A session I had with the up and coming young model.
Q: When did you first think "I'd like to model"?
A: I was 13 and in Jamba Juice with my dad and this woman came up to me and said, "You should be a model, you are so pretty!" She seemed genuine about it so I just thought..."maybe."
Q: How did you get started?
A: My mom went on the internet and surfed through some local agencies. But she has a real skill for filtering out the scammers. Never, under any circumstance, PAY for anything in the beginning unless it's a vital test shoot to start your portfolio.
Q: How does it feel to see your pictures at the stores (Kohl's)?
A: It's pretty flattering! I'm usually not the one that sees them first. Some classmates will call me and say, "Oh my gosh! You're at Kohls(Claires/Charlotte Russe, etc.)! It's pretty awesome!
Q: Do many people know that you model (at your school)?
A: I think just about everybody does! Only because my pictures are at local department stores and also I'll sometimes post a modeling shot as my profile picture on facebook. Or sometimes people will just ask.
Q: What was your first shoot?
A: My first shoot was Nuskin. It was in Malibu at this multi-million dollar beach house. I met some really nice models that were much older than I was at the time. That was a great push in the right direction and it gave me lots of confidence.
Q: How long do you plan on modeling and who are you signed with?
A: I'm signed with Ford Models INC. in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York when I turn 16. I plan to model as long as possible! But I will definitely put it aside during college. Education is always first.
Q: What do you eventually want to be (estimate) when you finish college or whatever you want to do?
A: I want to do something with animals whether it's biology, conservation, medicine, etc. My dream is to be the female version of Jeff Corwin and have my own informative show once a week where I travel and talk about wildlife and conservation. Hopefully the modeling money will help out with getting it kicked off!

"Freaky Girl"
FRIDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Monica, TREND Staff Writer
Nicki Minaj was recently on the cover of V Magazine for the Spring 2011 issue and she definitely showed off her eccentric and daring style. The photoshoot features Nicki in a variety of unique, statement clothing which presents her fierce nature. She wears colorful, tribal-esque body paint while dressed in a brightly printed Versace dress that hugs her bodacious curves (top). She also rocks the Azzedine Alaïa booties with an Emilio Pucci bodysuit while donning her signature pink lipstick (bottom). Nicki has always been known for her fearless attitude and powerful persona as a woman. She is all about individualizing herself and does not let anyone create her or dress her for the matter. Also, according to her Twitter, Nicki stated "It's safe to say my cover shoot in V Magazine is dedicated to my gays and fashionistas. My most bad ass shoot to date."She says that great fashion sense should always be "cooky or weird". She emphasizes that one should not be normal when it comes to fashion in order to be seen as a strong and independent individual.Nicki's fan base adored the photo shoot and loved the edginess of the character she portrayed in the photographs. While there were mixed reviews about the body paint being a bit controversial, it's safe to say that Nicki knows how to stir things up and go crazy with her sense of style!

Pish Posh
You may only recognize her as the wife of a world-renowned soccer star, but Victoria Beckham has certainly made herself a popular name in the fashion industry. Though her music career as Posh Spice was short-lived, Beckham has always been known for her subtly eccentric yet classy style.
Her Spring 2011 collection featured stylishly draped dresses in both nude and bright colors with a reference to the '60s with fabric, shape, and color. The make-up was inspired by Andy Warhol's bright portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. As pictured above, the eye make-up featured layering of purple shadows and a strong liquid line.
The big shocker was that only one out of twenty-six looks had a corset or waist cincher, both of which are well-known trademarks of Beckham's personal style. As Beckham said when narrating the collection, her style has loosened up quite a bit and her aim was for comfort. She also mentioned that she focused on shape and curve which stemmed from her primary inspiration drawn from the work of the Romanian sculptor Brancusi.
Overall the collection was well-edited, simple, heavy emphasis on beautiful spring colors including deep purple, blush pink, nude and juicy orange and focused on fit and draping.

Lazy Day Chic
UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bria, TREND Staff Writer
Name: Catherine
Major: Communications
College: Warren
Year: 4th
Spotted: Outside the MCC building
Outfit:
Sneakers: Urban Outfitters
Denim cut-offs: "Old Navy I think...but they were jeans and I cut them into shorts"
Pinstriped button-down: Forever 21
Oversized Cardigan: Urban Outfitters
Black Quilted Lap-top bag: Urban Outfitters
Funky Rings: All different places. "The big one (the flowered one) was a gift, I think the others are from Forever 21, I usually get my jewelry from there."
Q: So where does most of your style inspiration come from?
A: My style is influenced primarily from street style and I look at blogs like Facehunter and The Sartorialist for inspiration. I also really like looking at Rachel Bilson and Carey Mulligan for inspiration--I also love Anna Karina's French, 1960's style!
Catherine is in style with her beautiful accessory rings, which Lavanya wrote about in yesterday's blog. They truly can dress up any outfit. Her denim shorts are adorable and even better since they were a DIY project. She makes sure her outfit isn't too "Daisy Duke" by pairing her mini shorts with a cute, over-sized cotton button down and a cardigan in a gorgeous hue. Her laptop bag is casual but chic, and very versatile so she can use it with any outfit she wears to school. While she no doubt looks comfortable, she still manages to look stylish, which we all know can be a difficult combination to manage.

A Halo on Your Finger
TUESDAY ACCESSORY
Recommendation: Lavanya, TREND Writer
Why wait for the velvet box with the thousand dollar diamond ring?
Accessory rings have become the new hand ornament, adding a flare to any simple outfit or perfectly complementing the most glamorous ensemble at very affordable prices. Keep things bohemian and chic with rings from Urban Outfitters or try a bigger and better approach with these sparkling bands from Betsey Johnson or Juicy Couture. Double finger rings are the latest trend and typically come in the most elaborate and creative designs with the added construction room for two fingers instead of one!

A Breath of Fresh Air
THURSDAY: DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
Recommendation: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer
Peter Som Spring 2011 Collection
Nobody should ever worry about sticking to their chosen major. Designer Peter Som graduated from a college in Connecticut Cum Laude in Art History. He then continued his studies at Parson's school of design in industrious New York. While attending there he was awarded Isaac Mizrahi Gold Thimble Award. Instyle.com has an excellent timeline of the ten key moments in Peter Som's successful career.
His Spring 2011 collection is nautically nice with the inclusion of stripes and beach like wear. With the dress cuts, little cardigans and retro glasses, it appears as if Soms revived 1950's style clothing back to life for this Spring.

Making Fashion History
UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer
Name: Krystal
Major: History
College: ERC
Year: 4th
Spotted: At Price Center Courtyard
Outfit:
Over-size knit sweater: Express "I love this sweater! I have it in a few colors."
Long grey tank: BP at Nordstrom
Leggings: Express "Everyone needs a great pair of leggings. It's a rule."
Silver Key Pendant: Tiffany & Co. "A Christmas present from my boyfriend....he's the best!"
Patent Tote Bag: Coach Leatherwear
Grey slouch boots: Madden Girl, can be found at DSW
Q: What is your 'go-to' outfit?
A: "Exactly what I am wearing! I just have to change the sweater that I wear over the tank and it changes the whole look of the outfit. It's super comfy but still looks cute and put together."
Q: So what is the first thing you notice about an item?
A: "Well, I shop pretty often so I always keep my eyes open for something new. I love sweaters so I automatically gravitate towards those when I am in a store."
Q: Do you have any style rules?
A: "Never wear something you are uncomfortable in. No matter how cute the outfit is, it won't look right if you don't feel good in it."
Krystal's over-sized sweater over leggings is an adorable new take on an 80's trend. The slouchy boots add a dressy touch that keeps the outfit from looking sloppy. When wearing an over-sized top it is also important to add accessories that draw attention to your waist, otherwise you could look bigger than you are. Krystal does this perfectly with her long key pendant necklace that draws attention inward, but the same effect can be achieved with a belt around your natural waist. Her tote is a functional and stylish alternative to a backpack, as it can fit a laptop, a couple binders, and has pockets for pens and pencils.

Swooning for Macaroonies
TREND Stylist Addie has a secret talent hidden up her always stylish sleeves. That talent is making marvelous macarons. This exotic and rare treat originates from various countries such as France and Italy. They are expensive treats that come in all colors, flavors and pretty boxes too. They are a fancy delicacy. Even John Galliano hopped on board with the macaron craze. He collaborated with a world renowned chef to make his very own limited edition pink macarons!
Now, macarons are a tricky treat. Adelaide confesses herself," It's all in the "technique", so they say. I haven't quite mastered it myself." Although they are difficult, she keeps trying and has fun every time. The perfect macaron is supposed to have an eggshell like crust and a soft almost meringue texture.
Salted caramel macarons are her favorite to make.
Here is the recipe for her favorite Parisian macarons--Salted Caramel Macarons. Bon Appétit!

She's like one of our own!
UCSD's Best Dressed: Orange County Edition
Discovered by: Bria, TREND Staff Writer
Happy Wednesday everyone!
My name is Bria and I am a recent addition to TREND's staff. I will be doing the Wednesday Best Dressed this quarter! I can't wait to share with you the best of the best!
Hopefully your winter break was fabulous and fashion-filled! Seeing as everyone (including myself) was home for the holidays for the past few weeks, I decided to do an Orange County edition of best dressed. Our neighbors to the north have almost as many fashionistas as we have down here! One lady that fits in perfectly with the best-dressed crowd in San Diego is 20 year old, Tatiana. Her blend of classic style with modern twists is oh-so-chic, and her neutral color pallet is perfect for this cold winter weather.
Black skinny jeans: Paige Premium Denim
Grey cardigan: Forever 21
Flowy white tank: Forever 21
Knee-high socks: H&M
Combat boots: Vintage, but you can find similar ones here
Cognac-colored satchel: Urban Outfitters

- Name: Tatiana
- Spotted at: The Irvine Spectrum
- Occupation?: Full-time student at Orange Coast College
- Tell me about your style: I love basics, a great sweater or pair of jeans, but then make them my own with accessories. I love funky accessories.
- So who is your biggest style icon? Rachel Bilson. Hands down. I love her.
- Any other inspirations? Well, my sister owns a vintage store in New York, so i get a lot of pieces from her. You can find tons of classic pieces but also really unique and interesting ones.*
