Thakoon Vamps Up His Models with Fabric Woven Hair
This New York Fashion Week, Thakoon added a tribal twist to his models messy updo by adding in multi-colored fabric. Thakoon'sFall 2011 Collection has been considered a mash-up of Marie Antoinette and a Maasai warrior. His eccentric clothing was a great hit but it was also the hair that added the finishing touch to the theme of this collection.

Turn Up the VOLUME
Thursday: Designer Spotlight
by: Meena, TREND writer
Hair reached new heights at Richie Rich's spring 2011 runway show during the Mercedes-Benz fashion week in New York. Voluminous hair has been a style that has withstood the course of time and can convey different moods depending on the intensity. It is a style that can be easily mimicked and has proven to be incredibly versatile. Bold make-up was accompanied by large bouffants and colorful hair accessories in Rich's newly unveiledPopluxe collection. Overall, this show truly paid a homage to a hair style that NEVER goes out of style and inspires women to turn up the volume, throw in an eccentric hair accessory, and feel like a runway model.

The Man's Got Style
UCSD's Best Dressed
Name: Oliver
Major: Poli-Sci
College: Revelle
Year: 4th
Spotted by: 202 bus stop on Gilman
Q: So where does a stylish guy like yourself get his fashion inspiration from?
A: Probably two places. My dad [who Oliver told us hails from the UK], and vintage style from the 50's. The Rat Pack, Cary Grant, it's all very sophisticated.
Smart-looking Pea Coat: Calvin Klein
Heather-grey Cardigan: John Smedley
Cotton button-down: H&M
Navy trousers: J Crew
Boat shoes: Sperry Topsider
Black tie: Vintage ("from my dad!")
It was very exciting to finally find a guy who deserved the title of UCSD's best dressed. And all the gents at UCSD should take notes from Oliver. His style is classic and preppy, but he has put himself together in an unmistakably modern way. He is also one of the few guys I have seen who can pull off a tie outside of the workplace. By only fastening one button of his cardigan, he ensures that he looks pulled together without looking too uptight. His black pea coat is a much more stylish choice than the typical UCSD sweatshirt that 90% of the dudes on campus wear and is perfect for those weird, sunny-but-freezing days that we've been experiencing. And the boat shoes are a surprising touch that work perfectly with his preppy/hipster vibe. Bravo!

Urban Turbans...
Tuesday: Accessory
by: Lavanya, TREND writer
What do you get when you cross a knitted hat and a headband? A turban! These boho-chic hair accessories keep your ears warm with their broad width while looking extremely stylish as well. These bands also adapt with the seasons; knitted ones exemplify a more "wintery" look while silk turbans give a lighter feel for spring time. The shape of these hair accessories can be replicated with a simple head scarf to create variety in your wardrobe. Check them out at Nordstrom, Etsy, and Urban Outfitters.

Dare to Harem?
Friday: Muse
By: Monica, TREND writer
Are you too tired to dress for class but still want to look cute?Harem pants are definitely the way to go as they are starting to make a big statement on college campuses. And just because they're comfortable doesn't mean they're cute! One could even consider them as the sweatpants for the college fashionista.
These pants have been compared to the likes of MC Hammer and Aladdin but when worn with the right accessories, harem pants can really compliment your figure and your outfit can look amazing! Also, these pants are a great way to make a bohemian statement (top) as they have the billowy, care-free feeling to them but you can also makes these pants edgy as Ciara has done (middle).
Harem pants have even been spotted in street fashion during New York Fashion Week this past week and on other celebrities as well. While there are mixed reviews about harem pants and their unique shape, these pants are still fierce and anyone can rock them as long as they pull it off with complimentary items and of course, confidence!
Harem pants can be purchased at Urban Outfitters and Forever 21.

Relax, It's Only Dior
Thursday: Designer Spotlight
by: Meena, TREND writer
When hearing the name "Christian Dior" many of us imagine extravagant pieces to match the undeniably high prices... but in the Spring 2011 runway show in Paris, head designer John Galliano proved all of us wrong. This collection displayed an impeccable mix of sailor fun with 50s pin-ups, resulting in a bright and colorful show. By bringing a sense of island pleasure to theParis Fashion Week, Christian Dior successfully demolished any stereotypes associated with the glamor and intricacy of high fashion. This fresh nautical look with splashes of bright colors allows us to feel relaxed while in style.

Ms. Vintage
UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer
Name: Justine
Major: Human Biology
College: Warren
Year: 3rd
Spotted at: Warren Plaza
Outfit:
Smart Glasses: Dior
Poppy Yellow Big Button Jacket: A thrift store in San Fransisco called "Crossroads" (there's one in SD too)
Elegantly Embellished Dress: Charlotte Russe
Scholarly Book Bag: An outlet in Oregon
Sheer Flats : Urban Outfitters
Eco Friendly Bag: purchased right here at UCSD
Q: Where does your fashion inspiration derive from?
A: Well, I have to say I love vintage. I read fashion blogs and I notice there is a different aesthetic in the regular use of clothing. Reading them helps me decide what to look for in a thrift store. Right now, I am looking for "springy things".
Oh! And I am really into looking to Steve Allen for inspiration.
Justine did fabulous job of keeping things cheery and effervescent. I love the fact that upon observing her outfit, I can't readily decide if she looks ready for school or ready to run in the flowers! The yellow is just so honeycomb yellow that it's practically spring in a jacket! Her dress is black, a typically less frivolous color, but the embellishments on it make it super sweet and super cute. The bag and the glasses are so studious and seem serious when taken away from the rest of the outfit. However, both the bag and glasses make the outfit solid with their academic feel.

Athletic Accesories
TUESDAY ACCESSORY
Recommendation: Lavanya, TREND Writer
When it comes to fashion, accessories don't just encompass the glitter, the leather, or the fur. Anything that compliments an outfit is an accessory, and when it comes to athletic wear, all articles of clothing make great accessories due to their basic but bold designs.
Contrary to simple solid pieces (in this case athletic wear),Lululemon Athletica explores bold, and colorful patterns while using breathable cotton in their clothing. Bebe Sport andAmerican Apparel are also great places to check out sexy yet comfortable outfits for a quick workout.

Isn't She Lovely? Isn't She Wonderful?
UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bria, TREND Staff Writer
Name: Rebecca
College: ERC
Major: Bio Engineering
Year: 5th
Spotted: In Price Center Courtyard
Seeing as Valentine's Day is around the corner, this blogger decided to look for a cute and nicely dressed couple to feature for the best dressed. Rebecca was spotted hand-in-hand with a dashing young man, but he was not excited about having his picture taken. After some gentle coaxing from Rebecca ("Trevor get in the *$#& picture!) he still wasn't having it. Luckily, Miss Rebecca is smartly dressed and can hold her own in a photo. Her adorable black trench is from Express and her red-wine colored scarf is from Wilson's Leather.
Q: So what are your plans for Valentine's Day?
A: I don't really know...He is taking me to a "great dinner and a classy time" supposedly, but he won't tell me where.
Q: Any idea what you're going to wear?
A: Yess...I bought an outfit... I got a new dress from Express and some red heels!
Trevor must be a lucky guy!

Give a Little Love...
TUESDAY ACCESSORY
Recommendation: Lavanya, TREND Writer
With Valentine's Day around the corner, it's time to hit the shops and scout out a gift for that special someone. Although you can't go wrong with jewelry, diamond accessories have potential to be slightly out of one's price range. With cute rings, necklaces, and various other accessories, Fossil, Alex and Chloe (shown above), and Rachel Roy are great places to check out low budget, "valentine themed" jewelry for her. You'll be pleasing that significant other as well as yourself!

Britney Makes a Come Back!
Britney Spears finally made a come back this new year with the drop of her new single "Hold It Against Me". The pop princess is finally on track and is set to release her new album "Femme Fatale" in about five weeks on March 15th.
During the past few years, Britney was infamously known for certain mishaps but she is finally shedding that image and returning to her throne.
Britney stated on her Twitter that this album is supposed to be "Sexy and strong. Dangerous yet mysterious. Cool yet confident! She also released t-shirts that fans can purchase on the online store. Additionally, rumor has it that Britney is set to perform at the 2011 Grammy Awards on Feb. 13. Fans are eagerly awaiting her performance and are still inspired by Britney's strong persona.
Also known for her past Candies Line at Kohl's, fans look up to her fashion sense and are constantly influenced by her strong woman power. Her unique get-ups were also what inspired her last Candies line. Britney loves denim and most of her inspiration usually comes from her last musical tours such as Circus. Hopefully, her new album will motivate herself and her fans to be "sexy and strong" in the way her album cover portrays herself. Fans and others alike should take this Britney aura and apply it to how they wear their clothes as that is exactly what Britney does.

I really admire the timeless appeal of brands and designers like Ralph Lauren and J.crew, but I also love some of the really bold and innovative style you see from companies like Opening Ceremony. I try (in vain) to emulate the style of women like Chloe Sevigny, Alexa Chung and Francoise Hardy. But if I could, I would live in Anthropologie; that place is the epitome of happiness.Q: Whats the one piece in your wardrobe that you can't live without?A: I would have to say my leather bomber jacket. Simply because it is so versatile.Christine's overall look is the perfect balance of business and fun. Her pinstriped pencil skirt is professional looking, but the shorter length and the belt she paired it with keep it from being too "officy". Her adorable blue blazer with the cuffed sleeves also looks great. When choosing a blazer, you have to be careful that it hits you in the right place. If it hits you too high it can make you look boxy, and if its too long it can make your hips look wide. Christine is a pro and picked one that is the perfect length for her. When it comes to accessories, Christine knows how to add some funk to her otherwise conservative outfit. The bright yellow beads on one of her cuffs is a great accent to the shades of blue in her skirt and blazer, and adds a little something special. She also picked a great shoe. The brown leather and gold hardware matches her belt and book-bag, and the slight wedge gives her a little extra height to elongate the legs. All in all, she looks ready to kick-butt in midterms, and she is definitely going to do so in style!
