Her Morning Elegance
Friday Muse
TREND Writer: Lavanya Kumar
Featuring the artistic abilities of Oren Lavie, the music video titled "Her Morning Elegance" portrays the emotions, actions, and thoughts of a young woman performing aspects of everyday life. The specific "stop motion" style, the main focus of the video, evokes a sense of nostalgia in the viewer as it seems to slow and even stop time, causing one to think of life just as it is, in the moment. Nominated for a Grammy in 2010, the video and its artist celebrated their achievement by displaying all 2,096 images used to make the video as a gallery.

Designer Spotlight: Isabel Marant
Now, we all know that springtime typically brings us pretty flowing dresses, pastels, espadrilles, and usually some leftover chocolate bunnies. This Spring, French designer Isabel Marantchose to ignore what everyone else deemed "trendy" and went a sporty direction.
Her spring collection includes layers, lace up pants, and short-shorts. And one of her most unique colors is a sweet bubblegum pink! The best part is, her Spring 2011 collection includes tons of separates, allowing you to mix and match to create the kind of look you want. Some pieces are earthy and bohemian and others are preppy and fun. Such a mixed bag of an oh so chic collection!

Wednesday Featured Fashion: Garden Party
Name: Kayla
College: Sixth
Year: 1st
Major: Sociology
Spotted At: Sixth College Res Halls
Outfit:
Light Purple Cardigan: Uniqlo
Floral Romper: Korea
Polka Dot Bow: Etsy
Black Combat Boots: store in Melrose
Glasses: Cotton On
Q: How would you describe your fashion?
A: I would describe my style as feminine and comfortable. I just wear whatever that comes to mind that day so I don't really have a style. I just wear a mixture of all types of trends and whatever suits my taste that day.
Q: What is your favorite piece you are wearing?
A: I really like my bow because I love the polka dot print right now and it made my outfit look really feminine.Q: What's your favorite thing about spring?A: My favorite thing about spring is that I can finally wear pretty floral dresses and mix it with other prints.
Kayla's outfit is a perfect transition from the cold, dreary weather of winter quarter to the warm, light breezes of spring quarter. She paired a floral romper, which perfectly emulates the season's aura, with combat boots to tone down the sometimes overdone floral prints. Kayla also has used the trend of mixing/matching prints, done so with her floral and polka dots, and has successfully matched them together without clashing.
Suggestion: Spring is the perfect time to bring out your soft-toned cardigans, as Kayla did, and pair it with floral prints. It is also a really big trend this season to mix/match various types of prints so don't be afraid to try out new styles!

HEIGHT: 5'10"
MODELED FOR: Guess?, Ralph Lauren, Maybelline New York, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani

Designer Spotlight: Felicity Brown
First of all, there is such a thing as too many ruffles. We have seen it in action, and it's not pretty. However, gazing upon newcomer Felicity Brown's Spring/Summer 2011 line is making us realize that an abundance of ruffles is totally acceptable (and even encouraged) when done tastefully. Brown, a native to the U.K., launched her own label in 2010 after designing for fashion powerhouses Alberta Ferretti, Mulberry, and Lanvin. Her first line was inspired by the paitings of artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, in which women are depicted engaging in "questionable" behavior in outrageously ruffled dresses (pictured above is his painting 'Il Ballo al Moulin Rouge', 1890). Brown interpreted those ruffles and the confidence and power that these women projected and created a line of fabulously eccentric and stunning frocks. A collection that incorporates girl power and frills? Yes, please!

Designer Spotlight
Prabal Gurung is a relatively new name to the fashion scene, but that does not mean he is lacking in experience. Raised in Kathmandu, Nepal, Gurung began his fashion career in New Delhi, India and later moved to New York where he worked for such iconic figures as Donna Karan, Cynthia Rowly, and Bill Blass. After learning from the best, Gurung finally launched his own line at New York Fashion Week in 2009. Since then, he has dressed some of the most influential women of the day including Oprah Winfrey, Demi Moore, and even Michelle Obama. Gurung's designs are playful and whimsical, but still maintain a chic and elegant quality. He adds exciting textures and details to otherwise classic sillhouettes to create a style that works for any woman. His Spring 2011 collection features dresses, dresses, and more dresses! His look is a more modest one this season, with longer hemlines as opposed to the mini dresses that have been popular in seasons past. But the essence of the collection is undoubtedly spring. Flowing sheer fabrics, bright colors, and fringe are just a few trends to take away from his line. To get a look like the ones he features, try a strapless or sleeveless dress that hits mid-calf, either in a bright color like coral or aqua, or a neutral like beige. Add strappy heels, sweep your hair up, and you have a chic look that will impress. You can learn more about Prabal Gurung and his designs at www.prabalgurung.com

Spaced Out
For those of you who haven't noticed the alien invasion, I have brought to you pictures of alien Katy Perry in her video "E.T"featuring Kanye West and Lady Gaga stills in "Born this way". The future is now and futuristic style is the hottest trend. What does that mean for the fashion world? It means brightly colored makeup such as galaxy blue and poison pink colors with exaggerated eyes. Not sure how to apply the makeup? There are many You Tube makeup guru videos to watch such as this one.

Boho Chic
Feathers are beading their way into our hair this season. These feather extensions can last up to two months if taken care of well! The feathers are not woven into your hair. In fact, it is a silicone bead that is beaded onto your a couple strands of hair with the feathers attached.
They can be washed, brushed, combed, braided, and have hair products put on them and still remain intact. The plumes come in all colors of the rainbow including neutral colors. So let that bohemian spirit come out in you and stop by your nearest salon and bead on the latest trend!
(Some salons also offer the service for your pooch!) Price ranges vary but most salons sell two feathers for 15-20 dollars. To see a Demo watch here.
